Romans at the Vliet
at Notarishuis
Two thousand years ago, during the Roman era, the area of present-day Voorburg was occupied by the settlement of Forum Hadriani. Inhabited from the first to the third century, this settlement was the only town of any size in Northwest Netherlands and served as an important trading post along the Corbulo canal.
With a bathhouse, temple complex, and markets lining a paved main road, the town asserted its prominent position with an imposing city wall. Visited by Emperor Hadrian in 120 AD, the town received its name. The Huygens Museum showcases significant finds, such as a rare Roman well. Although the archaeological remains are mainly located beneath Park Arentsburg, Forum Hadriani remains an intriguing and continually reassessed part of our past.
